Es wird deshalb Phishing, zu deutsch Angeln genannt, weil Opfer mithilfe von Ködern angelockt werden.
Phishing wird in der Regel durch E-Mail-Spoofing (Vortäuschung einer falschen Absendeadresse) oder Instant Messaging durchgeführt. Oft werden Benutzer aufgefordert, persönliche Daten auf einer gefälschten Website einzugeben, deren Erscheinungsbild dem der echten Website ähnelt, nur die URL ist anders. Gefälschte Social Media Websites, Auktionsseiten, Banken, Online-Zahlungsabwickler oder IT-Administratoren werden häufig eingesetzt, um Opfer zu locken. Phishing-E-Mails können Links zu Websites enthalten, die Malware verbreiten.
